Ein Franzose machte einmal mit seinem Auto eine Reise durch Österreich. Er besuchte viele Städte und sah sich die Landschaft mit ihren Bergen und Seen an. Er fuhr nicht nur die Hauptstraßen entlang, sondern auch die Nebenstraßen: dort konnte er in den Dörfern das Leben der Menschen gut beobachten. Er fuhr an Bauernhöfen vorbei und sah das Vieh: Pferde, Kühe und Schafe auf den Wiesen. Die Bauern arbeiteten auf den Feldern und fuhren mit ihren Wagen die Ernte nach Haus. Das Wetter war schön und die Luft war warm.

Plötzlich kamen viele Wolken aus dem Westen und nach einer Viertel Stunde zog ein Gewitter über das Land: es regnete, blitzte und donnerte. Der Franzose kam mit seinem Auto in ein Dorf und hielt vor einem Gasthaus.

Es war gerade Mittagszeit. Er trat in das Gastzimmer ein: es war klein und gemütlich. Der Gast setzte sich an einen Tisch in der Ecke der Gaststube und wollte bei einem Wirt ein Mittagessen bestellen. Er konnte aber nicht Deutsch und der Wirt verstand kein Wort Französisch. Das war für den Franzosen sehr unangenehm, denn er hatte Hunger, konnte aber nichts bestellen.

Plötzlich hatte er einen Gedanken. Er nahm einen Bleistift und zeichnete auf einem Blatt Papier einen Pilz, denn er hatte gerade Appetit auf Pilze. Der Wirt sah die Zeichnung, nickte mit dem Kopf und ging aus der Gaststube. Der Gast freut sich auf das Essen und besonders auf die Pilze, aber er freute sich zu früh, denn der Wirt brachte keinen Teller mit Pilzen, sondern einen Regenschirm.

Vorstadtkrokodile

Eine Gruppe von Jungen lebte in einen Vorstadt und nannte sich “Krokodile”. Das waren Jungen von 12 bis 14 Jahren. Jeder Junge, der in der Gruppe wollte, sollte, eine Mutprobe ablegen. Nach der Mutprobe bekam dann jeder den Titel „Krokodile“. Hannes war 10 Jahre, aber er wollte auch in diese Gruppe. Nun musste auch er die Mutprobe ablegen.Die Kinder standen vor einem alten verlassenen Haus am Rande der Stadt.„Du kannst nicht! Du Angsthase!“ rief Olaf. Und die Krokodile riefen im Chor: „Kannst nicht! Kannst nicht! “

Nur Maria, Olafs Schwester, sagte kein Wort. Sie stand neben den Jungen im Hof und sah, wie Hannes die Leiter hinauf klettert. Die Leiter führte auf das Dach. Sie war hoch und alt, Hannes hatte Angst, aber er wollte nicht zurück. Das war eine Mutprobe für ihn! Nach dieser Probe werden ihn die Jungen in ihre Gruppe aufnehmen. Diese Jungen nannten sich Krokodile. Und Hannes wollte jetzt den Jungen beweisen, dass er als Zehnjähriger auch so mutig ist wie sie und keine Angst vor hoher Leiter hat.

„Komm runter, du kannst nicht“ rief Olaf wieder, und die anderen Krokodile lachten. Aber Hannes kletterte immer höher und höher. Bald war er schon auf dem Dach. Er sah zum ersten Mal nach unten. Ihm wurde schwarz vor den Augen… Zehn Meter sind doch eine schöne Höhe. Das war aber nur der erste Teil der Mutprobe. Hannes sollte noch auf dem Dach aufstehen, seine Arme heben und “Krokodil!” rufen. Dann durfte er herunter. Und Hannes kletterte Zentimeter um Zentimeter weiter. Endlich war er auf dem Dach, hob die Arme und rief “Krokodile! Krokodil!”.

Die Krokodile auf dem Hof riefen zurück:“Hurra, Hannes! Du bist prima! Du bist in unserer Gruppe!“ Und Olaf rief noch: „Das hast du gemacht! Komm runter!“

The Lady or the Tiger?

In the very old times there lived a king, and he was a man of great fancy. One day an idea came to his mind, and the king decided to modernize the system of court trial in his kingdom.

For this purpose there was built a big arena with galleries around it. In that arena the most important criminals were to be put on trial in public. But neither the king nor anybody of his court was to decide the fate of the accused person. It was the criminal himself who did it. On an appointed day when all the people had gathered at the galleries, and the king and his court had taken their places, the accused person stepped into the arena. On the other side of the arena there were two doors. The doors were side by side and identical. The accused person was to walk to those doors and open one of them. If he opened the one, there came out of it a hungry tiger and tore him to pieces, as a punishment for his crime. At the same time the sad bells began to clang, and the people with heavy hearts went to their homes. But if the accused opened the other door, there came out of it a beautiful lady. And to that lady he was immediately married, as a reward for his innocence. It did not matter that the accused might already have a wife and children, or a bride; the king took no notice of such trifles. Such was the king’s method of showing justice.

The king had a daughter whom he loved greatly. She was very beautiful and, at the same time, she was very conceited. It happened so that she fell in love with a young man whose social position was not as high as hers. But they were happy.

One day the king learned about their love. The young man was immediately put into prison, and a day was appointed for his trial in the king’s arena.

On this occasion the most savage tiger was caught and caged behind one of the doors, and a very beautiful girl was found to stand behind the other door.

The appointed day came. A lot of people gathered at the galleries. The king and his court were in their places. Then the signal was given, and the lover of the princess walked into the arena. He bowed to the king and looked at the princess who was sitting to the right of her father. The princess had learned the secret of the doors. She knew not only in which room there was the lady, but also who that lady was. It was one of the most beautiful girls of the court, and the princess hated her. The princess was very jealous.

When the lover looked at her, he understood that she knew behind which door was the tiger, and behind which stood thelady. His eyes asked: “Which?”The question was clear to her, and she had to answer. She raised her hand and made a slight movement towards the right door. Her lover turned and, without the slightest hesitation, went to the door on the right.

And now it is for you, dear reader, to decide: did the princess lie or didn’t?

Make your decision. But remember, that, on the one hand the princess loved the young man greatly; but on the other hand she was hot-tempered and jealous.

Eine mutige Frau

Frau Schuster wohnt in einem Haus am Ende des Stadtparks. Eines Tages geht sie abends sehr spät allein nach Hause; sie hat viel Geld bei sich, weil sie am nächsten Tag in Urlaub fahren will. Plötzlich hört sie hinter sich Schritte. Sie dreht sich um und sieht einen Mann, der ein schwarzes Tuch vor dem Gesicht trägt. In der Hand hat der Mann eine Pistole.

„Geben Sie mir sofort Ihre Tasche oder ich schieße!“, ruft er. Die Frau erschrickt, sie bekommt Angst. Aber dann sagt sie: „Ja, ich gebe Ihnen meine Tasche. Aber schießen Sie mir bitte zuerst ein Loch in meinen Hut. Dann glaubt mir mein Mann, dass man mir das Geld gestohlen hat. Und er kann sehen, dass ich in großer Gefahr war“.

Der Mann lacht. So eine verrückte Situation hat er noch nicht erlebt. „Na, dann legen Sie Ihren Hut da auf den Boden“, sagt er. Das tut Frau Schuster sofort, und der Mann schießt ein Loch durch ihren Hut.

„Nun schießen Sie bitte noch ein Loch in meinen Mantel!“, bittet die Frau und hält den Mantel in die Luft. Wieder lacht der Mann. „Die Frau muss verrückt sein“, denkt er. Und er schießt ein Loch in den Mantel. „Und jetzt bitte noch ein Loch in meinen Pullover, aber vorsichtig bitte!“ Jetzt lacht der Mann nicht mehr: „Ich kann nicht mehr schießen, ich habe keine Kugel mehr“, sagt er leise. Darauf hat Frau Schuster natürlich gewartet. Jetzt lacht sie: „Na, wenn Sie mir ein Loch in den Pullover schießen, dann gebe ich Ihnen natürlich auch meine Tasche nicht“, sagt sie.

Da kommen auch schon Leute, die die Schüsse gehört haben, und der Mann läuft schnell in den Stadtpark: ohne Tasche, ohne Kugeln.

Frau Schuster kehrt nach Hause zurück und fährt am nächsten Tag in Urlaub. Die Geschichte hat sie oft sowohl den Verwandten, als auch den Bekannten erzählt.
