Christmas in My Family.
Hello! My name is Alexander. I live in Ukraine. My family is large. I live with my parents and grandparents. I've got two elder sisters Olga and Anna. Now they are students of Kyiv University and they visit our place only on holidays and some family occasions. Each Ukrainian family has its own customs and traditions. Ours is not an exception. My parents are very sociable and friendly people, so from time to time our house is full of guests. Our favourite holidays are New Year, Christmas and Women's Day. My mother thinks that at night of New Year's Eve the old year with all its troubles leaves us forever and the New Year with all our hopes and expectations knocks at our doors. On the eve of January the 7' we start celebrating Christmas. It's a real ritual for ray grandparents. My granny always gets ready for this religious holiday beforehand. On Sviat Vechir we gather around the table for a holy supper of twelve symbolic dishes. We are not allowed to start supper until the first star appears in the sky. We begin our supper with the kutia (a dish of honey, poppy seeds and wheat kernels boiled in pure rainwater). There are no meat and meat products on our table. My granny is a wonderful cook, so we enjoy her varenyky, holubtsi and desserts made from dried fruit and honey. After tasty supper we go to bed. Early in the morning we go to church to take part in the church service. When we come back home we give each other presents and wish "Merry Christmas'". All boxes with the presents are located under Christmas tree. It's a nice time when my sisters are at home and we've got a lot of happy moments together.

THE UNUSUAL CRUISE
Every year the sea between Finland and Sweden, which is called
the Bay of Bothnia, freezes over for several months. There are about 60 Finnish ports in
this ice zone, and during the winter about a third are kept open by the
ice-breakers. These are the strongest ships in the world, three times heavier
and three times more powerful than any other ship of the same size. They can
slice though one-meter thick ice without any effort. The Arctic icebreaker Sampo
is a majestic vessel. For 30 years the Sampo was used to clear a path for
smaller ships carrying goods to the port of Kemi, at the tip of the Bay of
Bothnia. Now this fine old ship is retired and taken on a new, lighter role,
carrying passengers on one of the most unusual cruises in the world.
From mid-December to April thousands of tourists get
on the Sampo at Kemi for an unforgettable day trip through the frozen sea. The
night before, they stay at Kemi Snow Castle Hotel beside the harbor. This hotel
is built out of sculpted snow and ice, complete with towers, dining room and
even a wedding hall, which is very popular. Guests sleep comfortably in several
layers of sleeping bags on blocks of ice in the little white bedrooms. As
summer approaches, the hotel melts away and is rebuilt later in the year. The style of the facility, including the theme, shape, size and
decorations, changes annually.
Most tourists board the Sampo from the quay⃰ at Kemi,
but there is another way to access the ship. Dressed in the thickest possible
snowsuit, boots, gloves and hard helmet, the bravest of them can travel for ten
kilometers across the frozen bay by skidoo. After a brief lesson on how to
control this ‘motorbike on skis’, people find riding across the ice at high
speed breathtakingly exciting. There is a stop for a cup of coffee and a
sandwich at a farm on one of the small wooded islands before the ride continues
and the Sampo appears in the mist.

The Niagara Falls
One of the most interesting places in
North America is the Niagara Falls. It is nine hundred metres wide and about
sixty metres high. The Falls are among the natural wonders of the world.
The Niagara Falls are situated on the
Niagara River between the prov¬ince of Ontario in Canada and the state of New
York in the United States. There are really two big waterfalls divided by a
small island there.
The noise of the Niagara falling waters
can be heard for twenty-five kilometres. Imagine a million tons of water
flowing over a cliff ninety feet high every five minutes and you will get an
idea of that terrible noise. And what great power the Niagara have! They move
big stones about and throw them into the boiling waters below.
Some time ago an old ship without people
in it was put into the middle of the water. It sailed down the river like a toy
boat. It reached the falls and dropped into the boiling water and never
appeared again.
There were some people who wanted to
become famous by swimming across the most dangerous part of the Niagara River.
One of them was Cap¬tain Webb. He said that he wanted to swim across the river
and a crowd of people came to see that. On the evening of July 24-th, 1883,
Captain Webb came up to the river and jumped into the water. Many people
watched him with horror. Soon he appeared in the middle of the river but then
disap¬peared under the water forever.
In 1902, Miss Taylor decided to go over
the falls in a barrel. The woman examined the barrel carefully and got into it.
The barrel was closed and then thrown into the river. When it reached the
falls, it was taken by the terrible force of the water. When the barrel was
finally caught and opened, Miss Taylor came out alive.
Everyone comes: kings and queens, film
stars and millions of ordinary people. They come to see the wonderful sight of
the falls.
